Sustainable Lockup

A collaborative space to enable sustainable production in entertainment.

Material Reuse

Materials in, materials out. The motion picture industry processes an incredible amount of material while developing film and tv. Think costumes, set materials, props, equipment, and everything and anything you see on film. Some of these materials are rented and reused within the industry, but many end up in the landfill.

For a long time, Metro Vancouver did not have a place or network to house donated materials and redistribute them back into the community. This need was an opportunity that Keep it Green Recycling and Green Spark Group decided to take on and in May 2017, and thus Sustainable Lockup was formed.

Since we opened our doors, the Sustainable Lockup has been able to receive and redistribute well over 100 tons of set materials.

Once the reusable materials have been accepted into Sustainable Lockup they are made available to the industry, film schools, community theatre groups, artists, and charities - for free! This ultimately saves filmmakers and artists money on both the front end of production; by not having to purchase some of their necessary materials, and on the back end; by reducing their waste disposal fees.

During strike, load up reusable set materials and arrange a drop-off at the Sustainable Lockup.

We will temporarily store the materials until we can find a home for them. As we receive materials, we will include photos in a gallery on this website to show you what's available. Click the button to view our material gallery!
